Going "home"

Today, thanks to your support, we were able to assist 2 men looking to make a change in their lives by purchasing bus tickets for them to go "home".  One man is going to Nashville to enter a Rehab program and he has family support there that he does not have here in Memphis.  The other man is going to Gainesville FL where he has a friend that is willing to help him get back on his feet by giving him a place to live until he finds work and can get his own place.

In addition to calling and confirming that these men are welcome where they are going, I always ask "is this a better situation for you than where you are now" and today both of these men sounded like a ton of weight had been lifted off of them as they both replied "oh yes"!!  It always makes me smile when we can get someone to a place that they feel is "home".  Whether that is Memphis or somewhere across the country where they have support and love, we are blessed to be able to help people go "home".

Join our ministry with your prayers, your time or become a monthly supporter of our ministry to help people through various programs such as the program that allowed us to purchase bus tickets for these two men.

Taking the next step....

A while back we posted about a single lady that had worked her way out of a shelter for abused women, she needed pants for work and a gracious donor gave her several pairs of brand new pants. She is still working the same job at IHOP and is trying to get into her own apartment. She has an apt. picked out where she can afford the rent, she just can't afford the deposit to actually move in. We have been praying that we could find an organization to help her but the only help we can find is for people being evicted, not moving in. If you would like to help this woman get into this apartment, we are trying to raise $200 in the next 2 days. We would love for her to be able to move in this weekend. Ruth's Heart will match 100% of any donations made with the comment "deposit" on the donation. If you can help, please make a donation here www.ruthsheart.org/donations and put "deposit" in the comment. Thank you for your continued support of our ministry and those in need. God bless!!

UPDATE:
Within 5 minutes we had a donor to match us on the rent needed for this sweet lady!  Praising the Lord for all of those willing to step out and be Jesus to someone they don't even know.  I called and this sweet woman could not stop crying tears of joy.  SO VERY Blessed to be a Blessing!

Coincidence??? NO WAY!!!

Last night we met a friend for dinner at a new restaurant in Olive Branch, MS.  A couple things happened and I was so grateful to God for putting us there!  (Oh, and the food was fabulous too!)

Our friend, Sherri had been there before so she wanted to introduce us to the owner.  She was a sweet woman and came and talked to us for a while.  In conversation she told us that God had laid on her heart that very morning that He wanted her to provide 10 families with Thanksgiving meals........

I couldn't believe my ears!

I had a call just a few hours earlier from a woman that we worked with in August and at that time she was homeless.  She called to let us know that she had been blessed with a home and was just wondering if we knew of anywhere she and her family could get a Thanksgiving meal.  I did not know of anywhere but told her I would let her know if something came up.  WOW!!!

THEN, we continued talking about New Orleans, where she is from and we are planning a second Ruth's Heart location, and it turns out she worked with the homeless community in New Orleans for 9 years!  Amazing!  (Yes, we have a lunch date Monday afternoon!)

THEN, I walked out to our car to get her a brochure and there was a man outside and asked me if we had jumper cables, that his car was just down the street.  I told him I wasn't sure but I would go in and get my husband to come talk to him.  So as my husband was helping this man and his daughter jump their battery, he didn't have enough light and left them to come back for a flashlight.  When he returned, the daughter said she had noticed the Ruth's Heart magnet on our car and wanted to know just what we do.  So he explained to her and she turned to him and said

"Can you please help my daddy?

This young lady's father needs help with his addiction to alcohol as it is separating him from his family and is tearing her apart.  She described the church that she goes to but said it isn't for her father, she then described the church she hoped her dad would find and what she described was Jacob's Well, our ministry partner and urban church for all 'non-perfect' people, where everyone is welcome and loved regardless of their situation, struggles, past sins or weaknesses.

She is going to call me and with much prayer and God's guidance we hope to be able to find him the help he needs for himself, his family, and his daughter who obviously loves him so much.

Coincidence:  a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.

Appointment:  an arrangement to meet someone at a particular time and place.

I think this night was definitely an "appointment" made by God himself and we just didn't know about it until it happened!

Thank you God for all you do, even when we have no idea what you are up to!!!

Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Special Needs: Diapers, Crib Sheets and Uniforms - can you help?

We have two clients with very immediate needs - if you can help please let us know!

he first is a single mom who had a baby girl on Sept. 30th and is in need of size 1 diapers either Huggies or Pampers (or a gift card). She also needs crib sheets. She has a crib but the baby isn't sleeping in it because she has no sheets.

The second is a single woman who is at the abused women's shelter and just got a job and is in need of uniforms. She is currently wearing and washing the same uniform every day. She needs size 14 black pants and size XL white button down shirts.

If you can help either of these ladies, we would be glad to pick up any donations or deliver gift cards if you'd like to donate towards these needs.

To make a donation for either of these ladies, please go towww.ruthsheart.org/donations and put "new baby" or "uniforms" in the comment with your donation. We will ensure that 100% of your donation goes to these women.

Thank you and be blessed!

I am always humbled when a woman calls us for help and we talk through her immediate needs but then...she whispers her phone number or address.

I cannot help but wonder who or what she is hiding from or afraid of.  I am so thankful that God allows us to give hope and encouragement in a time of need like these.  I cannot even imagine going through what some of the women we speak to are enduring.  I am also constantly encouraged by their strength and endurance.

Please keep the women (and their children) that are struggling with abuse, homelessness and desperation in your prayers today.  Please pray that we can give them the glimmer of hope, strengthen their faith, and the Love of Christ that they need to press forward and change their situation.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

A new program that IS WORKING!

Ruth's Heart started a new program recently where we provide bus passes while someone without transportation and in need searches for a job. We then promise to provide 1 or 2 / 7 day passes when they get a job so they don't have to worry about transportation until they get their first paycheck! IT'S WORKING!!! We just heard from our SEVENTH client that is part of this program and is newly employed!!! We are so excited to be able to provide transportation for her for the next 2 weeks!

Thank you for your support and please pray for these clients to keep these jobs and continue to move forward and improve their lives!

Weekly sponsor - $17.50 (5 passes X $3.50)
Monthly sponsor - $70.00 (20 passes X $3.50)

What a difference a "walker" makes...

Sometimes we get calls and the needs and story that follows are just too good not to share!!!

This is a story about what ministry partnership looks like, a homeless friend, a walker and the fire dept......

We received a call on Saturday from a friend that feeds the homeless as their ministry (Ann Hingle). A homeless friend of theirs (Red) had broken his walker and was stuck on the 7th floor of an apartment building, he couldn't get down without his walker and the friend he was visiting had left.

Another ministry partner, Big Dog Street Ministry, had given Ruth's Heart a walker that was donated to them several months ago and they couldn't use, so we actually HAD a walker for their friend, Red.

What a Blessing this donation was!

We called Red and he didn't know the address of his friends apt. and the friend was gone...we explained that we "have" a walker for you but we really have to know where you are in order to bring it to you. He said he would figure it out...

A little while later he called and said he had called the fire dept. and they were there. I asked him if he was ok and and he said he knew they could tell him the address where he was...ok, I know it's not a good use of our tax money but to me it was.....genius!  However, the building was locked so nobody could get in, so Red had to figure out a way to get downstairs to let us in...he found a shopping cart (again, genius) and it worked as a temporary walker and he was able to get downstairs!

So we then took the new walker to another ministry partner (Jacob's Well) and their van driver took the walker to Red after church and then even transported him to a shelter.

So this sounds like a LOT to go through but what REALLY was the cost of helping this man? From being stuck in an apt. with no way out and not sure anyone really cared...To having a new walker, shelter for the night and security of knowing he could get around...the cost was really just a few phone calls, a walker that was donated, and a little time on the part of the volunteers.

Sometimes it really is the little things that make the biggest difference...make a difference today in the life of someone that needs to know "somebody" cares about them. The cost may be small but the reward is so great.

A Storage Unit called "home"

We are always amazed and humbled by the ways women find to protect themselves on the streets.  Last night we were supposed to deliver a greyhound bus ticket to a woman named Marie that we have been working with and is homeless.  Ruth's Heart is helping her get back to Florida after trying to survive on the streets of Memphis for over a year.  When I called her last night it was about 8:40pm and she said we couldn't bring the ticket to her now because the gates were locked and she couldn't get out.  What I didn't realize is that she lives in a storage unit and the facility gates are locked at 8pm.  My first thought was, that is so smart!...and so incredibly sad all at the same time.  I pictured what it must be like coming and going every morning and night from a storage unit she calls "home".

Today, Marie is going back to an area that she is familiar with in Florida, there is room for her at the local Salvation Army and they have a 90 day program that will hopefully help her get back on her feet.  We met her this morning with her ticket and she promised to call when she got there.
I've never before thought of the women, men and children that could be making storage units their home, but will forever be thankful for the security that it provides those like Marie that are just trying to feel a small amount of safety while they struggle to get back on their feet.

Pay It Forward blessing of a bus pass...

If you have been following our story about the letter we received with the "7 day pay-it-forward" but pass...we received a follow up call today from the woman that was in a domestic shelter last week and through your donations we were able to provide uniforms for her to start her new job.  When I met her to take her the uniforms, we never spoke about how she was going to get to her new job, I assumed since she didn't ask, she must have it taken care of.  Well, today she called and asked if we happen to help with bus passes because she is no longer at the domestic shelter where she could walk to work and is now in a boarding house where she will need transportation.  The beautiful thing is that our normal policy is to provide two 7 day passes which normally gets them to their first paycheck.  However she is in need of three 7 day passes because she gets paid exactly 3 weeks from today.  Coincidence?  I don't think so!  Having the "pay-it-forward" pass is going to allow this woman the comfort of not worrying about how she is going to get to work all the way up to her first paycheck, and we agreed that the first thing she would buy with her checks going forward would be her bus pass for the next week.  That was already her plan, I just wanted to be sure.

"Thank you Lord for taking that bus pass provided by one person that is now back on their feet and providing it to another that is in the midst of the struggle to get back on her feet.  Your timing was not only beautiful but perfect!"

If you would like to help with the remaining bus passes for this client, the cost will be $33.00 and you can make a donation of any amount and put "bus" in the comment and we will make sure your donation is used towards this cause.  Visit our donations page at:  Ruth's Heart Donations

Also consider checking the recurring payment option from PayPal if you'd like to help support clients like these each and every month.

Thank you and be blessed!

Sometimes it really is the little things...

Today we are so very humbled...we received this letter in the mail after investing only $41.50 on this client by providing him with a total of 9 bus passes (2 to search for a job and 7 to get him through to his first paycheck once he found a job) and obtaining his Birth Certificate for him from another state which he could not do without a computer and a credit card.

"Sometimes it really is the little things than can change someone's life."  Please join us in praying that this young man's positive life changes will continue!

If you know someone that you think would be blessed by this story or the Ruth's Heart ministry, please share this or go to the Ruth's Heart facebook page and share this story.

Thank you and God Bless!

Cries for help come in all different shapes and sizes...

Sometimes cries for help come in all different shapes and sizes.  This one came to us Saturday night while we were at Jacob's Well on a paper plate.

Today we are just thankful for every way that people are able to reach out for help and am blessed by every single one that finds a way!

Don't forget to look for people that need you, their cry may not come in an obvious way.

Homeless Fathers With Children

It's not often that we encounter a father with children on the streets but when we do it's heartbreaking. There are shelters for women + children but not men + children. We are searching for shelter for a dad and his 2 daughters, ages 2 & 7.

Please join us in praying for this family as they will arrive in Memphis late tonight and they have nowhere to go as of tomorrow night. There is a long story but they are actually escaping a situation worse than being homeless. Thank you for your prayers and continued support!

It's not just a car...it's a home

Yesterday we met a woman, 61 years old that lives in her car behind a drug store. She has been on a waiting list for housing for over 14 months. The drug store manager lets her stay there and let's her come into the store and freshen up whenever she needs to. I met with her, spent some time walking and talking and as we were walking back to her car she was telling me all about her car and the things she had done to it and the things she wanted to do like replace the ragtop with a different color, replace the luggage rack, etc. at first I thought wow she really loves that car...then I remembered it's not just her car, it's her home...and don't we all tend to tell out friends that visit out home all the things we plan to do? This lady is so lovely and she spent time telling me about all of the "blessings" in her life and the people and churches that bless her with her daily needs like food and water, use of the restroom, microwave, etc. She would say "oh that church blesses me by...and that store blesses me by...and that person blessed me with...

Please join us in praying for her today that she finds housing soon, she is truly an inspiration and all that I "hope" I would be in her situation.

The blessing of food...

I'm reminded this morning of the blessing of 'food'. While my pantry sits pretty much "full" (though I often can't find anything to eat) I am reminded by a sweet woman that so many people are in homes that look normal, that we drive by every day and don't realize that the people are "hungry inside that home". We are busy this morning catching up on calls but something told me to take this call instead of letting them leave a message while we continue to catch up, this feeling happens pretty often and it's never failed that I was glad I did!  Today it was a single woman with a 16 year old son and they just moved into their new apartment (hardly new, but new to them) and they have NO food at ALL (not just the stuff in the pantry that we don't feel like eating).

We hope to share some HOPE with this mom and son today by taking her an emergency food bag and a couple bus passes for her and her son to go to the local food pantries so their pantry is "no longer empty".

If you would like to provide a food bag or bus passes to families like this, become a $40 per month donor and you can help give HOPE and make a difference in someone's life by providing for a family just like this one every month. Become a monthly donor and begin changing someone's life today!

The blessing of a bed...

Last night we met a young couple in Memphis to give them a list of resources and to put a little gas in their car. They have been living in their car for several weeks, he lost his job, then their home, and has been paying the car payment so they have somewhere to live. They finally found a boarding house that they could afford and the bed has bed bugs and ticks...so they are sleeping in the car... in the driveway...he told me he can't remember the last time he slept straight more than an hour. Today we are on a mission to get them a bed! If you would like to help please make a donation on our webpage (any amount will help!) so we can purchase a bed, sheets, and pillows so they can rest their weary heads tonight and sleep!

Also, she is 4 months pregnant, the gas we purchased was for her to make her OB appointment this morning. If you can, please help with a donation at:

ALL DONATIONS RECEIVED TODAY WILL GO TO THIS COUPLE.  And if you can't help financially, even more importantly please keep them in your prayers, they are a sweet young couple getting off to a very rough start. Thank you and remember to count your blessings today, I was reminded by this couple that our blessings are so plentiful!!!

A Short Ride To A Better Life...

One of the things Ruth's Heart has been providing more and more of are bus tickets...

Our only requirement is that the client can verify they have a place to go and / or a job lined up and it's a better situation for them than they are currently in.

This morning we purchased tickets for a man to return to his home in Alabama where he has enough money to pay for an extended stay for 2 weeks and has a job starting on Sunday!!!  We are so blessed to help him today and wish him the very best!  As we say so often, it's the little things (like a bus ticket) that can truly make the biggest difference in someone's life.

Thank you for following and supporting our ministry because together we CAN change people's lives!

Single Moms

We have heard from 4 single moms in the last 2 days that are either being evicted or their utilities cut off.  All of them seem to be trying so hard, working, providing for their children the best they can but just can't quite make it.  One told me that they have had to chose who eats on which days in her family to be sure they could pay the rent but can't cover utilities.  Another's utilities are already off so her and her 4 children are in a local shelter.  Another mom we spoke to today has a part-time job and is interviewing for a second part-time job tomorrow.  None of these positive things they do are taken into consideration when they apply for assistance.  I know they have made decisions that got them where they are but what is troubling is that because they ARE WORKING, they don't qualify for assistance.  Now, if they lose (or QUIT) their jobs, then they will qualify for help...if it were you and your children what would you do???  Would you quit working???  I'm ashamed to say that if my child was hungry I might.  I'm very sad for these moms today because the need is so big, I fear that most of the 4 will either be without utilities or without a home over the next week or two.

We are asking for donations and will put 100% of what we collect towards helping these 4 families.  If you would like to help, please PRAY for these moms and children #1, and if possible, help financially #2.

If you are able to make a donation, please put "moms" in the memo.  www.ruthsheart.org/donations

Thank you and please take a moment to kiss your family and consider all of your blessings today!!!

Humbled yet again...

A client that is also a very unique artist made this shirt for me!

I just love it and am so very humbled by the blessings that we receive!  He said to took a little longer than he expected because he had to borrow the money for the red paint.  I asked him what I could get him since I didn't have any cash and I'm now at BK loading him up with a whopper meal.  :-). So very blessed!

Sometimes the needs are few...

One of our very special clients who recently received housing after being homeless for many years told me he was bringing me a list of things he still needed for his new apartment. I told him to bring it to me and we would see what we could do....I was so humbled when he handed me this simple list last Saturday at Jacob's Well. I am so thankful that his greatest needs have turned to simple household items like a dustpan and dish rack when last year at this time they were food and shelter. I am thankful for those that are humbled by their past, and still modest and hopeful for their futures! Please join us is praise for this client, he has come a l-o-n-g way!

We have a special request from a new client, she is a single woman and moved into her apartment in March. She has been living without a stove, washing machine, T.V., couch or even chairs. She did not ask for these things, they came up in ...conversation when I asked her what she had and didn't have...humbling to say the least. She called only to ask for utility assistance because her bill is due later this month and she knows she is going to be short. I am thankful for her trying to be proactive, we have referred her to a partner ministry for help with utilities because the organizations that help with this are either out of funds or she doesn't qualify because she hasn't lost employment in the last 90 days.

If you or anyone you know has any of the appliances she needs and can help deliver them, please let us know! One thing I can promise when providing this type of donation and time is that you will be blessed. Thanks so much and please share...
